sandy. today they were back on the trail in some key swing states. fox's doug mckelway reports. >> mellow, -- hello, wisconsin! >> reporter: both president obama and challenger mitt romney refocus now on campaigning. >> governor romney has been using all his talents as a salesman to dress up these very same policies that failed our country so badly. >> reporter: wisconsinwas once a state considered a lock for obama, but with polls showing a tightening race the president's appearance in green bay today is telling just how close this election could be. >> i'm really moved by your welcome. >> reporter: mitt romney appeared in another key battleground state addressing a crowd of window manufacturers in virginia. the former massachusetts governor slammed the president on private sector job creation while continuing to grow the federal government. >> he's been talking about how he's going to save big bird and then playing silly word games with my last name or first and

then attacking me day in, day out. attacking me doesn't get people back to work. >> reporter: meanwhile in a last minute scramble to move undecided voters in swing states several campaign surrogates from the candidates' spouses to their vice presidential running mates spanned out from colorado to ohio. ohio continues to be ground zero as the neck and neck race there could be the deciding factor in who takes the white house. ohio has 18 electoral college votes and has picked the winner in 25 of the last 27 presidential elections. doug mckelway, fox news. >> let's bring in fox 5 political analyst mark plotkin to talk a bit about what's going on on the campaign trail these days. we saw mayor michael bloomberg kind of give mixed messages. he endorsed president obama today but told them him not to bother coming to new york to survey the damage. >> well, the endorsement was important. i've compared it to colin

powell's, with independents he's an independent it means something and with well off voters who admire business acumen, he's a wealthy businessman endorsing obama, so it's key. in terms of coming to new york i think it's a little more intriguing than that. supposedly governor andrew cuomo didn't want him in new york because obama wouldn't allow him to speak at the convention reports have it. so that's what that's all about, but he's going to win new york, so it really isn't very consequential. >> it looks like mitt romney is gaining ground in that aspect. >> i would say that's the most troubling component that bothers the obama campaign even when he was way down, romney, and falling way behind in some of these swing states independents were drifting toward him. now they're up by eight or 10 points and that's -- elections are won with independents

because democrats vote for the democrat, republicans vote for the republican and especially well off independents in affluent suburbs that have high voter turnout, that's a very disappointing element for obama. >> is it just us on the east coast or does it feel like this weather event kind of sucked the oxygen out of the campaign? >> i think it probably helped. nobody wants to see people or their lives destroyed, but i think it allowed the president to act like the president and his move, which of course, he would never admit to, but in terms of a political calculation not campaigning for those three or four days showed him in the best possible light and i think david axelrod, his campaign manager, all but admitted, that this was a boon or an asset. nobody wanted it to occur, but it stopped the romney momentum and it portrayed the president as a leader. >> we see now news today that mitt romney plans on giving a

"closing argument" in wisconsin as he wraps up the campaign. i guess wisconsin is an obvious choice. what are we expecting to hear here? >> well, in wisconsin the president won by 14 points last time. it seems to me that the president is defending states that he all won. he's not expanding the map and romney is chasing after him. the president got 365 electoral votes last time. he won by seven percentage points. nobody thinks it's going to be like that. it's going to be close and if obama wins, it surely won't be by the margins he won before. >> fox 5 political analyst mark plotkin tonight. a new jersey lawmaker on the hot seat tonight. the daily caller is reporting senator bob menendez paid two women from the dominican republic for sex. the website says the women reached out to them claiming the senator underpaid them. a spokesperson for the senator

said they will not respond to a completely false accusation. menendez has represented new jersey since 2005. new charges in the penn state sex scandal. prosecutors charged the former school president graham spanier with trying to cover up molestation allegations against jerry sandusky. spanier is charged with perjury, obstruction, conspiracy and endangering the welfare of children, now the third school chalk charged in the investigation. sandusky is current -- official charged in the investigation. sandusky is currently serving a 30 year sentence. we asked the redskins about their retro look. we'll hear from them next. sandy is gone, but the economic storm is not going away. a new report puts sandy's financial impact from damage at now $50 billion. that is more than double initial estimates. continued power outages pushing those estimates a lot higher.

meantime at least before the storm americans were starting to feel better about the economy, consumer confidence in october hitting its highest level in 4 1/2 years and that had them spending more monday. retail rose 5% from last year, but troubling news on the job market. plant layoffs in october hitting a five-month high and small businesses adding 50,000 jobs in october, fewer than the prior month, but the big numbers out friday when the government releases its october employment report. meanwhile we're seeing kellogg getting fat from pringles, the food company posting a jump in quarterly profits as more people were munching on pringles. kellogg bought the chip company earlier this year. that's business. i'm neil cavuto.   >> this fox 5 stock market report is brought to you by your lexus dealer. live life heroically. anncr: which do you believe?

first there were questions about lavish spending on travel and entertainment. now the metropolitan washington airport authority is facing more criticism. this time it resolves around widespread problems in hiring and contracting. fox 5's karen gray houston has details. >> the airport authorities has a big job running national and dulles airports and overseeing the civil line to dulles rail project. the -- silver line to dulles rail project. the president and chairman stepped up to comment on this latest slap. >> we take the issues and concerns in this report very seriously. >> the audit found an i.t.

vice president and his staffers accepted more than 25 free trips from a company with major contract with the authority and a human resources vp who was supervising relatives. >> it appears that some of the issues and incidents are a one time isolated event that occurred in the past and have been dealt with. >> the authority says it has already instituted some ethics reforms including terminating noncompeting contracts involving former board members, but the audit said it found a culture of lax internal controls that allowed managers to award excessive salaries, unjustified hiring bonuses and ineligible benefits. in a statement governor bob mcdonnell said unfortunately actions on the part of certain members of the board of directors, a general lack of transparency and accountability and employee misconduct have jeopardized the public's confidence in the authority's ability to ethically manage its critical assets and complete

area of low pressure we're kind of stuck in this circulation and while you had a few sprinkles and very light showers today, we could see another round of that tomorrow. so unfortunately looks like the clouds are going to hang tough with us tomorrow. wanted to remind you, if that's bad news, at least we have an extra hour to snooze this weekend. we are returning to standard time saturday night. officially this changeover happens at 2 a.m. in the morning sunday. set back your blocks an hour before you go to bed. sun will go down on sunday at 5:04. tomorrow it's going to be another day with the clouds winning the game, maybe a few breaks of sun in the afternoon, but we sort of thought that would happen today and it didn't. a little piece of energy came rotating around through this trough of low pressure that's up over the east coast. that produced a few clouds and sprinkles that we're still seeing tonight. you can see where clouds are trying to break up out to our west, but we believe even if there are some clear spots later tonight, it will probably

fill in again because we have one more little disturbance out of ohio that has to kind of swing through the area tomorrow morning and so there could be a couple more sprinkles around, maybe it shows up in the form of a few flurries if you live along and west of the blue ridge and might deposit another inch of snow in garrett county. i know they're not looking forward to that. sandy's remnant low is up over eastern canada. we think one more day of this pattern will chase the clouds out of here. temperature now is 50 degrees, 48 baltimore and 45 for gaithersburg, 46 for dulles and martinsburg. winchester comes in at 43 and culpeper and manassas 33 degrees. where you've had clearing, it's cooler. futurecast shows that dry spot out to our west, but it does fill in for the morning. there could be sprinkles here and there and yes, another inch, maybe two for the mountain communities out along 68 for garrett county and down in west virginia for the high

spots. for most of friday afternoon clouds to begin, maybe some brightening of the skies for the afternoon. i think we can get some sunshine in more of a widespread fashion for saturday and just a few clouds passing by to our south sunday. the weekend should be sunnier, still on the cool side with temperatures in the 50s. tonight 42 degrees, spotty sprinkles, tomorrow a lot of clouds, 54 degrees, definitely on the cool side. your planner, you probably don't need the sunglasses in the morning are maybe wipers briefly, temperature 48 in the morning, by noon 50 with mostly clouds and by 5:00 some sunny spots and 53. next week could be interesting. i'll elaborate more on that on the news edge at 11:00. we keep the chilly pattern the next few days. warm to the south. what we'll have to watch next week is a storm that may be developing in the pacific northwest that may end up on the east coast. i'll talk more about that coming up in just a minute.

addictions. winehouse died last july from alcohol poisoning. thanks for joining us tonight. here's brian now with the news edge at 11:00. >> shots fired in a heated moment. now a police officer is behind bars charged with trying to murder a man in custody. the district heights officer was indicted charged with shooting a handcuffed suspect in the back after an arrest in september. fox 5's maureen umeh is in the newsroom with the story. >> that suspect kalvin kyle is now paralyzed from the waist down just released from the hospital yesterday. >> undergoing intense physical therapy and as you can imagine, he's trying to adjust to his new reality. >> reporter: a traffic stop gone horribly wrong, kalvin kyle now paralyzed from the waist down shot in the back authorities say by veteran district heights police sergeant johnnie riley. kyle's attorney chris griffith said it's a shooting that should have never happened. >> in the united states of

america no matter what you may have done or may be suspected of, you don't get shot in the back when you're unarmed and handcuffed. >> reporter: it happened on september 6th along county road in district heights. authorities say riley pulled kyle over on suspicion of riding a stolen motorcycle. kyle was handcuffed and placed in the back of riley's cruiser while the scene was secured. at some point kyle got out of the cruiser and started running down the street, his hands still handcuffed behind him. they say riley started shooting hitting kyle in the back. the prince george's county state's attorney has indicted riley on charges of attend murder, first and second degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence and two counts of misconduct in office. griffith says kyle and his family believe the charges are appropriate, a beginning towards some level of justice. >> it's difficult to see how there will be any real justice in the case.

mine mr. kyle's -- i mean mr. kyle's paralyzed for the rest of his life and so it's just one of those unfortunate cases that there may not in the end be any real justice. >> reporter: sergeant riley turned himself in today and is being held without bond. he will be back in court tomorrow for bond hearing. the edge on virginia now, the search for a stafford county pipe bomb suspect came to an explosive end in montana. police say laurence stewart lobbed more explosives at them as they tried to arrest him in connection with three bombings in virginia. fox 5's audrey barnes with the details. >> stafford county law enforcement officers and federal authorities have been looking for stewart since tuesday. stewart was wanted in connection wit the pipe bomb incident at the -- with the pipe bone incident at the home of an ex-girl -- bombing incident at the moment of an ex- girl friend and bombing of a

sheriff's deputy's home. the headline on one entry was called a corrupt system, i will not be a victim and he had a list of people who he'd had run- ins with before. sheriff charles jett said it was clear stewart had planned more attacks. >> it is absolutely great news that this man is in custody. there was a great deal of uneasiness in our law enforcement community as we also know that this individual had in certain forums made statements about other people involved in this case. >> stewart was pulled over for speeding in montana. officers found out he was wanted in virginia. he tried to get away by throwing at least four more pipe bombs at officers. he abandoned his vehicle and was taken into custody after a brief foot chase. laurence stewart will be extradited back to virginia to face charges including several counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

we have a new look at storm damage from super storm sandy, some of new jersey's barrier islands left in tatters. homes and beaches in long beach were swept away in the storm. army national guard troops are going door to door to look for survivors and assess the situation. briefing his troops thursday morning lieutenant eric shaw told them one body was discovered earlier in the day. there could be more out there. >> a lot of devastation. from what i understand, there's roughly 18,000 homes without power. there's severe gas leaks, so right now we're just trying to get everything together for the office of emergency management here and the different municipalities and just assist in whatever needs they have going on. >> this was the deepest water i've ever seen in my lifetime of being here. i was 11 in the '62 storm and the water came an inch from our house and this time it was a foot deep in our house.

>> millions are still without power. help is on the way. more than 100 power trucks were airlifted from california today to help restore power to the areas hit by the storm. snowshoe resort in west virginia got more than 2 feet of snow before sandy moved on. today resort officials say they wished they could open for skiers this weekend, but it's too dangerous. there are widespread power outages. sandy brought 60 mile-per-hour winds to snowshoe. no power, no heat, now no fuel for cars, part of the story in new jersey today. a gas shortage looms. sandy left shortages across the state. now drivers are braving long lines in hopes of fueling up. fox's robert gray reports. >> reporter: a major gasoline shortage hitting new jersey and new york as the east coast tries to get back to normal in the wake of hurricane sandy. >> last night i was in a place. i waited 45 minutes. i was about 50 feet from it. they ran out. so it's like you're not even guaranteed even if you wait in

line an hour. >> reporter: and today is no better. >> we got here about 6:15, 7:30 now, about an hour and 15 minutes, figure will be at least another hour. >> reporter: lines stretch miles from the few stations with power as residents line up in cars and by foot to fill up before the limited gasoline supply is gone. an overwhelmed mass transit system plus massive power outages are fueling the high demand and with temperatures set to drop overnight homeowners are hoping their nightmare will soon be over. >> they're saying seven days, so that gives us five more days without electricity, but we're hoping it's sooner than later. >> reporter: limited bus and rain service did resume this morning, but -- train service did resume this morning, but the problemare nowhere near solved. >> i'm declaring a transportation emergency. >> reporter: new york governor andrew cuomo declared a transportation state of emergency to last until friday. in new york i'm robert gray. president obama returned to the campaign trail today traveling to wisconsin just five days until election day.

the president spoke out against his rival saying mitt romney would be a rubber stamp for the right wing. >> he's saying he's the candidate of change. well, let me tell you, wisconsin, we know what change looks like. and what the governor's offering sure ain't change. giving more power back to the biggest banks isn't change. leaving millions without health insurance isn't change. another $5 trillion tax cut that favors the wealthy isn't change. >> in the days leading up to the election president obama plans to travel to florida and back to virginia. republican presidential nominee mitt romney back in virginia today rallying supporters at virginia beach. he once again pounced on the president's economic record. >> would you want four more years where 23 million people are looking for a good job? would you want four more years with the declining earnings and raising taxes?

a lot of people taking advantage of early voting in the days leading up to tuesday's presidential election. one maryland woman tells us she already voted, but it did not go as she planned. fox 5's beth parker has the story. >> reporter: it's the first time for early vote and obviously it's going over well here in prince george's county. look at this huge line that snakes around here. one woman we talked to said she didn't mind waiting in the line, but she did mind what happened next. >> i was really upset. >> reporter: she's in her 60s and had never met the chance to vote in a presidential election. she didn't want her face shown on tv, but she says she waited two hours in a long line wednesday here at the upper marlboro community center. who did you actually vote for?

>> obama. >> reporter: and whose name popped up as the one that was checked? >> mitt romney's. >> reporter: she said she's certain she did not make a mistake. she saw what happened when she double checked the ballot. >> i went back and my x was under mitt romney. >> reporter: she's a lifelong democrat. >> i was very disgusted. i was like upset like what's going on here? >> reporter: she says she did point it out to an election worker who was helpful. alicia alexander is the prince george's county elections administrator. >> we haven't had one report of any voting irregularity. >> reporter: but there have been other complaints around the country including one in north carolina where a voter says she wanted to vote for romney, but the machine kept defaulting to obama. back in maryland alexander says always double check your ballot and remember to read the sample ballot ahead of time, especially this year. >> in prince george's county we do have 14 questions on the ballot which is -- could

you may drop down to 33 degrees, same for hagerstown. yes, the clouds will be hard to get out of the area tomorrow. we'll hope for a few breaks by afternoon, but more sunshine spatter. the sun will be here, maybe a little -- saturday. the sun will be here, maybe a little breeze as well. also on the cool side for sunday 55 degrees with a few clouds late in the day, but this looks like a pretty good weekend forecast, kind of energizing and definitely feeling like the first weekend of november. the chill continues for much of the mid-atlantic and the northeast because we have a blocked pattern in the atmosphere. so what's left of sandy is spinning around in here and it keeps the air chilly and cloudy and little bits of energy rotating on through. there's been a lot of warmth in the middle part of the country and down south and west. that is not slated to get in here, but we think as sandy remnants move out we'll get the sunshine back. there's another storm in the pipeline next week coming into

the pacific northwest tonight and tomorrow. this is also something to watch. believe it's going to dive way down to the south and eventually reorganize itself off the coast. that might be in the tuesday, wednesday time frame. do not think of this next storm as a sandylike storm. it's just kind of a typical feature we might see in the fall months, in november in particular, where warm ocean water bumping into that chilly air gets a storm kind of developing here. we think for the most part this thing will run out to sea, maybe d.c. gets a little shower out of it but probably just a bit of a breeze and chill. what we're concerned about with this one is we don't want this anywhere near new england or new york city. that is one of the tracks unfortunately as it forms off the coast that maybe it runs up into new england giving them more wind, more rain, could produce a little snow if this chilly air hangs around is another scenario. another scenario would take it out to sea. we're rooting for that second scenario because nobody wants

to see that storm developing now, again not a sandylike storm, just kind of a coastal low for the tuesday, wednesday time frame. tonight 42 degrees, cloudy sprinkles, kind of the same deal tomorrow, more clouds than sun, sprinkle not out of the question or a flurry along the blue ridge and west. our temperature friday only about 54 degrees. so on the cool side. your fox 5 accuweather seven- day forecast, into the weekend with brighter skies and not extra hour to sleep as we -- and an extra hour to sleep as we return to standard time saturday night. don't be surprised when the sun goes down about 5:04 sunday night. dry monday, just clouds. tuesday we'll keep an eye on it. if it were to get closer, maybe we'd have to stick a shower in tuesday night or wednesday. right now we think it will be off the coast keeping our temperatures on the chilly side. that's it for weather. let's send it over to scott smith for a look at sports. >> this is the verizon sports desk with scott smith.

both adam laroche and sean burnett want to stay with the nationals, but they also want multi-year contracts and both have declined their one year mutual options instead opting for free agency. laroche is coming off an amazing gold glove season. he hit 33 homers and knocked in 100 runs.
